Rape-Trial Protest May 27th, 2011, NYC

Permanent Wave is staging a protest in the wake of the acquittal of the two cops accused of raping a drunk woman at her apartment in the East Village. (They were found guilty of Official Misconduct and fired by the NYPD.)

The details: Friday, May 27th, 5-7pm; 100 Centre Street.

Today’s decision, which took six days for the jury to reach, is pretty distressing based on what we outside the jury room know of the incident. Whether or not it was the right decision based on the evidence and the judge’s instructions, the message sent by the verdict is that this woman was too drunk to be believed about the rape, but sober enough to consent to sex, and that catch-22 is worth protesting.
