Girl Talk: The Pilot

So. Awkward. But note proto-’90s attempt to deconstruct the lyrics to “Electric Youth.”

Guest Post: 5 Reasons Whip It, Now Out on DVD, is Super 90swoman

Kristen Wiig! Drew Barrymore! Eve! Ellen Page!

I first saw Whip It, Drew Barrymore’s debut film about a misfit indie rocker girl finding salvation in roller derby, at a preview screening for media types. Let it be known, those screenings are the worst; you’re in a room with 100 other people are required to see at the movie for a variety of reasons, and you don’t even get to talk about it afterwards.

Which was a shame, really, because for me, Whip It was an emotional experience. I was weeping, heartily, throughout the film. Tears of joy and recognition, because for the first time in quite some time I saw a movie that presented the slings and arrows of womanhood as something realistic, entertaining, and charming. Tears because yes, there is a film out there directed by a woman, written by a woman, and about a girl who wants to be rad with a nearly all girl cast and it’s a uncompromising vision! That isn’t condescending!

Is “Tik Tok” the feminist party anthem of 2010?

kesha, looking kind of 90s and kind of hot, in esquire

Ada, MMM-Bop is totally on my ipod! So is Party in the USA, which I saw Miley perform live. She was so bad. But so fun!

As you note, so were a lot of performers in the 90s. Like Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer who, by the way, I saw in concert–TOGETHER–my freshman year of high school. Not to brag or anything.

Okay, now, let’s talk about Ke$ha. I just saw that “Tik Tok” is the number one song on itunes right now. Which is cool, because I like Ke$ha. Partly because I am in my 30s and so I find a party anthem with the lines “Ain’t got a care in the world, but got plenty of beer” and “Before I leave, brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack” to be hilarious. HOWEVER. This song would have made me cry when I was 15, significantly more earnest, and dreaming of getting away from girls who just wanted to party and drink. (In NY, I imagined, rightly, I would be able to party and drink…while discussing feminist theory. We’ll bring the whiskey on the 13th!)

Astropuppees.com Steals All Its Content

For real. I am not writing this for “Astropuppees.com” I am writing this for 90swoman, a rarely updated but impassioned blog. Astropuppees.com just recklessly pulls content from various other blogs to make it look like a ’90s superblog. That makes it look like I and lots of other people (some of whom are pissed) are writing for them. This is annoying, because I am doing this site for fun and for free and not to get ad traffic for some dude that apparently lives in Palm Beach? ( Registrant: PN Ventures Group 721 Us Hwy 1 St. 216. North Palm Beach, FL 33408. United States Domain Name: ASTROPUPPEES.COM Created on: 23-Aug-99 whois.domaintools.com/astropuppees.com)

In a fit of annoyance, I wrote to them. I called them. I got no response. I was told by their service provider, HostGator, that the best way to get to a site like that is to file a copyright claim. I’m not mad enough to go to all that trouble, but if you are, here’s how to do it: http://www.hostgator.com/copyright.shtml. My only consolation is that this post will presumably end up on their site too.

Our Hit Parade Catch-Up

Yay, Kara, you’re back! As I have told you, your grad school applications were really messing with my social life. Before I respond to your posts, here’s one of the things you missed: my husband performing a Black Eyed Peas cover nude. Kathleen observed that he is in better voice when he’s naked. More comfortable, I guess. Continue reading
